A Moose, a Turkey and a Ferret Walk Into an Insurance Agency…

Share

While the title may sound like a bad joke, even the most hilarious accounts of car and animal interactions don’t always end in laughter. If you don’t have the right coverage you could be left paying hefty repair bills long after the perpetrator has flown the coop. Check out these YouTube-worthy scenarios to see if you’re covered top to tail when nature calls.

A Moose Attacked My Car!

Moose are enormous animals, with adults reaching over seven feet tall and weighing as much as 1,500 pounds. They get easily confused — and easily angered — and have been known to attack parked cars, ramming into them with their massive antlers and causing major damage. While the entire idea seems almost ludicrous, the repair bill won’t be a laughing matter.

If your car goes head-to-head with wildlife, the comprehensive section of your auto insurance policy can cover the damage. From a cow that wants to date your Prius to crows trying to eat your windshield wipers, comprehensive insurance can take care of covered incidents that happen to your car even when you’re not driving. Comprehensive coverage is not required by law in any state, but often the lender who holds your loan or lease will require you to have it.

Get out of Here, You Turkey!

In the strange but true category — one town in Pennsylvania reported a pack of 20 wild turkeys that terrorized their streets and even chased people into their houses and cars. If you get targeted by a pack of marauding turkeys and end up driving into a lamp post while trying to escape, your collision insurance can help get you back on the road. Collision can cover accidental damage to your own vehicle while you’re driving. Also not required through state law, your auto loan lender might still insist you have this type of coverage.

Save the Ferrets!

We’re used to looking out for all kinds of things when we’re driving, but imagine encountering your neighbor’s three pet ferrets making a break for it just as you’re about to turn into your driveway. You swerve to miss them and take out the neighbor’s fence instead. Liability insurance can cover accidental damage to other people’s property that you incur while driving. While all states require a minimum amount of liability coverage, you may want to adjust your levels and the amount of your deductible to suit your needs.

Although these animal encounters may seem far-fetched, day-to-day interactions with furry and feathered friends can leave you with a big bill if you don’t have adequate coverage. Your local We Insure agent can review all your policy options and help make sure you have the right types of insurance, at deductible and benefit levels appropriate to your budget, so you’re not left chasing your tail if you and your vehicle experience some animal attraction.
